A Chilean wine exclusively sold at a Walmart subsidiary was given a ‘Best in Show’ award at the Decanter World Wine awards

Walmart wins this round: Wine not?

Prestigious wine auctions are currently dealing with fraud and accusations of tampering of wine supposedly worth thousands of dollars. But what if one of the world’s greatest wines was stuck on a shelf somewhere between baby wipes and off-brand cereals and only cost $6?

A Chilean wine sold exclusively at Asda — a British supermarket chain owned by Walmart — has won a platinum “Best in Show” award at the Decanter Magazine World Wine Awards. The La Moneda Reserva Malbec, a dry red wine made from a grape more closely associated with Argentina which costs the equivalent of about $8 and is currently discounted to closer to $6, won the prize for the best red single-varietal under £15 (about $21), according to CNBC.

"At just £5.75, the exclusive La Moneda Reserva Malbec is the perfect example of how we're able to offer shoppers exceptional quality at low prices," Ed Betts, wine buying manager at Asda, told The Independent. "The La Moneda Reserva Malbec is also currently on rollback at £4.37 and as the perfect match to barbecued meats, we're expecting high demand in the coming weeks."

The judges described it as having "an excellent freshness" with a finish that was "full of energy.”

Asda has confirmed that sales of the wine have skyrocketed following the accolade; interest in it crashed the chain's website — which now lists the La Moneda as out of stock.

If you're one of those people who orders the cheapest glass of wine on the menu because you can't tell the difference (no shame), this news is going to make your day. A $7 bottle of wine sold at Walmart has been ranked as one of the best in the world by Decanter Magazine, which covers wine and spirits. The award-winning red wine is La Moneda Reserva's Malbec, a Chilean wine whose description notes that it has a "deep purple color with violet tints, rounded and velvety tannins, complex plum, fig, and strawberry flavors and excellent length."

The wine earned the title of Platinum Best in Show at the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards, where more than 200 experts tasted thousands of wines (blindly!), proving that a wine's price tag is not always associated with its quality. The best part is the wine is now available for the first time at Walmart locations in the US, after previously only being sold by Walmart's UK-based grocery brand, Asda. Note that wine is an in-store-only purchase at Walmart, so you can't buy it online. Check the online store locator to see if it's in stock near you. If you volunteer to bring the wine to dinner, you'll be able to impress your family and friends with this award-winning bottle — they'll never have to know the cost.
